How STX Connected Global Rights and Content Operations in One Cloud Infrastructure

Overview

STX Entertainment (STX) used a variety of in-house, on-prem, cloud, and outsourced tools and services to manage core rights and content operations. In a move to upgrade and consolidate operations, while reducing cost, STX made the decision to partner with Molten Cloud. The implementation of the Molten Cloud platform achieved landmark success in operational efficiency, control, and cost reduction. The following passage outlines the key aspects of this success.

STX Entertainment

A powerhouse in the entertainment production and distribution arena, STX boasts an impressive library of major films and television series, including original, and critically acclaimed content like Molly’s Game (2017), I Feel Pretty (2018), Hustlers (2019), and Bad Moms (2016), an original which grossed over $100 million at the box office. Renowned for its name-brand recognition and star-powered library, STX consistently delivers compelling narratives crafted by some of the industry's most celebrated talents.

Challenge

As a leading global media company, STX’s footprint spans hundreds of contracts and millions of content files, turning everyday operations into a series of complex, time consuming workflows. STX’s data and content spanned across a variety of tools and services, such as IBM Aspera, AWS, Azure, Dropbox, Sharepoint, Filmtrack, film labs, and on-prem servers and drives. This widespread use of various tools and services is common among long-established companies, presenting key challenges that STX needed to address:

Rights management (using Filmtrack)

  • Absence of a reliable, single source of truth for rights, avails, and contract data
  • Complex interface leading to low internal adoption
  • Increased risk exposure

Content management (using various tools and services)

  • Lack of complete visibility, control, and organization over all its content globally
  • High costs due to fragmented operations and multiple tools
  • Content redundancy

Recognizing the need to modernize their operational infrastructure, STX sought out technology partners and ultimately chose to collaborate with Molten Cloud.

Approach

Molten Cloud tackled this challenge with its hallmark flexibility and holistic approach to operational efficiency.

  1. All rights and contracts data was consolidated, analyzed, and cleaned. Molten Cloud received exports from previous rights management tool, Filmtrack, along with any documentation in Excel.
  2. Customizations and configurations were discussed with relevant teams at STX, and implemented by the Molten Cloud onboarding team. Data was first ingested by Molten Cloud team, and then reviewed by the STX legal team. STX’s rights management on Molten Cloud was officially live within 3 months of starting the rights management migration!
  3. Content management Molten Cloud has experience working with 100+ tools and platforms for content storage and delivery, streamlining content migration to Molten Cloud. In collaboration between the STX content operations team and Molten Cloud onboarding, we created a game plan to tackle each individual tool — leveraging automated, programmatic pipelines to migrate content in bulk. Working at the scale of 100s of terabytes, reaching an incredibly high  rate of content migration exceeding 1 millions files in 1 week.
  4. Content duplication was addressed The system created digital fingerprints for each incoming file, to definitively determine and eliminate duplicates. Over time, as expected, this led to more than 25% reduction in overall storage overhead.
  5. File organization The system also organized incoming files under associated movie titles and projects, and under consistent file structures in each such title.
  6. Transcoding For ease of use, the system also created transcoded versions of large files, for in-browser real-time previews, which often included multi-channel audio ProRes files. The system also generates technical data on each file, to enrich the information available in the database.
  7. For content fulfillment workflows, Molten Cloud enabled cloud-based utilities to securely and instantly package content files from across the entire integrated repository, and deliver through a variety of mechanisms across the world.

Result

STX Entertainment's collaboration with Molten Cloud transformed its operations. By working together to integrate and consolidate various systems, they achieved significant improvements in efficiency, control, and cost savings. The joint effort in overhauling rights and contracts management, streamlining content migration, and eliminating duplication, greatly simplified STX's workflows globally. As a result, STX reduced storage overhead by 25% while gaining real-time access to secure global content delivery with enhanced previews.

"With our partnership with Molten Cloud we reduced the bottle neck of content overhauling our on prem systems. The de-duplication technology that Molten has developed significantly reduced our costs on all things content related".     - David Messinger, VP of Content Management, STX
